When clients come to us with a strong design vision and a challenging site to build on, that’s where the work gets interesting. This custom home on Eagle Summit Drive brought both, and the result is one of the most architecturally deliberate homes we’ve built.
The clients had a clear concept from the start: clean, modern lines on the exterior, an open interior, and a connection to the remarkable landscape around them. The centrepiece of the interior is a large sliding glass patio door that opens onto a raised concrete-topped deck with direct views of Mount Baker. Everything about the design was oriented toward that view and that feeling of openness. On the exterior, the clients specified that all beam and roof supports be fabricated from powder-coated steel, which gives the home a sharp, contemporary profile unlike anything that relies on conventional wood detailing.
The powder-coated steel structural elements were the most technically demanding aspect of this build. Every support had to be measured and fabricated to exact specifications. There was no tolerance for error because each piece had to fit precisely within the overall structural and design plan. The level of coordination required between design, fabrication, and installation was significant. The home also sat on a corner lot, which meant the exterior had to present well on two street-facing sides. With a design this deliberate, that kind of dual-elevation challenge actually pushed the exterior detailing to a higher level.
